Conservation and Restoration of the old orphanage of Karolos Allatinis

The intervention and the addition were carried out with respect to the existing building. 

 

My main goal was to show off the beauty of the old , Preserved Building-which used to host a boys’orphanage - and to keep its original character.

 

As the building is characterised as “Preserved”, only minor changes to the form and structure are allowed.

 

The addition of a small cafe- bar follows the same rules. 

The volume of the cafe-bar is a “small box” in analogy with the preserved building facing the entrance. 

 

An old existing warehouse, is also  preserved and is united with the new volume with wooden movable louvers.

 

The new use is a public library, chosen because of the building’s internal characteristics. 

As limited intervention could be done (even in the inside, for statical reasons) only certain doors change for safety reasons.
